Head coach Maaßen celebrates successful debut
FC Augsburg picked up a big win in their first game of pre-season, defeating local rivals TSV Schwaben Augsburg 5-0. Despite a resilient effort from the Bayernliga side, FCA were in the mood for goals and found the back of the net four times after the break.
In his team’s first friendly of pre-season, head coach Enrico Maaßen handed games to U23 players Kristijan Taseski and Franjo Ivanovic as well as loan returnees Felix Götze (Kaiserslautern) and Lukas Petkov (Verl).
After just four minutes, FCA fans thought they had seen the opening goal, but Ivanovic saw his effort strike the far post. The team came close again a minute later, this time Petkov just missing his chance. A little later, the FCA youth product was forced off through injury and replaced by André Hahn (12’). The substitute had a number of chances to open the scoring but couldn’t break the deadlock (16’, 18’, 22’).
Meanwhile, TSV Schwaben did not hide away and looked to make an impact of their own. A long-range effort from Simon Gail went just wide (28’), but at the other end, FCA finally managed to take the lead. Lasse Günther hit a ball into the centre from the left, where Ricardo Pepi knocked the ball over the line from the far post to put his side 1-0 ahead (33’). The lead could have been bigger at the break, but Pepi (38’) and Ivanovic (43’)saw efforts denied by TSV goalkeeper Max Reil. On the stroke of half time, Mads Pedersen’s long-range free kick struck the crossbar (45’).
Maaßen made a number of changes at half time, introducing nine new players into the game. Among those was new signing Maximilian Bauer, who wore FCA colours for the first time. After the change of ends, FCA found most of their danger coming through set pieces. Fabio Gruber put a header over the crossbar (49’), shortly before Bauer and Hahn each missed chances to net the second goal within a few seconds of each other (53’).
The goal finally came just over the hour mark. Jensen hit a corner into the penalty area where Gruber headed in to make it 2-0 (63’). The ball was in the back of the net again ten minute later when Josué Mbila crossed the ball back from the byline, where Iago finished to make it 3-0 (73’). After good chances for Maurice Malone (74’) and Florian Niederlechner (77’) went untaken, it was Iago again who increased the lead to 4-0 on the 80-minute mark. The Brazilian was also involved in the fifth and final goal, crossing for Hahn to head in in the 85th minute.
Maaßen can be pleased with the result as pre-season gets off o a winning start. Next up for the new head coach and FCA is a friendly against VfB Eichstätt in Donauwörth on Friday 1st July (18:00 CEST).
