FCA battle to goalless draw with Leipzig

Thorup’s side continue unbeaten league run

First Team 14.02.2025, 22:48

FC Augsburg remain unbeaten in the second half of the Bundesliga season. On Friday evening, Jess Thorup’s side drew 0-0 with RB Leipzig and extended their run to six league games without defeat. Despite a courageous performance, the Fuggerstädter were just missing the little bit of luck needed to turn the draw into a win.

FCA head coach Jess Thorup made two changes to his starting eleven from the goalless draw in Mainz. Dimitris Giannoulis returned after suspension, while Fredrik Jensen also came into the side. Keven Schlotterbeck missed out due to illness, which meant Felix Meiser appeared in a Bundesliga squad for the first time.

Under the floodlights at the WWK ARENA, FCA took on the league’s fourth-placed side, Leipzig. Christoph Baumgartner had the first opportunity in the third minute, but the Fuggerstädter also showed attacking intent. In the 40th minute, Alexis Claude-Maurice had the best chance of the first half, but his strike from distance went narrowly wide.

Plenty of chances but no goals

Both teams came out for the second half unchanged, and Leipzig threatened straight away. Xavi Simons fired just wide with a long-range effort in the 49th minute. FCA still posed a threat though. In the 72nd minute, substitute Arne Maier got a shot away in the box, but his strike was blocked. The ball was then delivered back into the area, but Kristijan Jakić’s header was saved by Leipzig goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.

In the 81st minute, Augsburg had the biggest opportunity of the match. Jakić played the ball to Giannoulis on the left, and he pulled it back perfectly for Frank Onyeka. The midfielder though fired wide from around eleven yards out, as FCA missed a golden chance. Leipzig went close themselvescin injury time, when Kosta Nedeljkovic headed against the bar (90+2’).

FCA picked up a point and continued their unbeaten run thanks to another solid defensive display. Their next match will see Augsburg travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, 22nd February (15:30 CET).
