In their opening friendly of the summer, FC Augsburg secured an impressive 6-0 win against sixth tier Landesliga side FC Gundelfingen. Two summer signings opened the scoring in Jettlingen, west of Augsburg, as Ruben Vargas (18’) and Florian Niederlechner (21’, 26’) opened their Augsburg accounts. Following the break, Dorian Cevis (47’), André Hahn (56’) and Lukas Petkov (66’) added their names to the scoresheet as the Fuggerstädter ran out comfortable winners. FC Augsburg began their summer preparations nine days ago and wore their new third kit for the opening friendly of the summer on Tuesday evening. Florian Niederlechner and Ruben Vargas started in their first matches since joining the club while fellow new signing Iago and Carlos Gruezo were both on the bench. Other new arrivals Mads Pedersen, Noah Sarenren Bazee and Marek Suchy, who only joined FCA on Monday, all didn’t feature in the matchday squad. Meanwhile, international players Alfred Finnbogason, Marco Richter, Kevin Danso, Michael Gregoritsch and Martin Hinteregger also didn’t play in Jettlingen. The rest of the squad were joined by eight academy players: Seong-Hoon Cheon, Maurice Malone, Dorian Cevis, Julian Kudala, Stefano Russo, Adrien Koudelka, Christopher Lannert and Lukas Petkov. Gundelfingen created the first chance of the match from a corner but it was FCA who made the stronger start. The Fuggerstädter enjoyed more possession in the opposition and after Niederlechner was denied by Gundelfingen goalkeeper Dominik Dewein, Augsburg were rewarded for their early dominance in the 18th minute. Niederlechner played in Simon Asta down the right wing and he fed Georg Teigl. The winger drove into the edge of the box and cut the ball back to the onrushing Vargas, who clinically finished a clever move. Just four minutes later, Niederlechner finally found the back of the net to double Augsburg’s lead. Teigl was again involved to cross for the former Freiburg striker to poke home (21’). The new signing wasn’t finished there, scoring again in the 26th minute after an almost identical move as Niederlechner was in the right place at the time to tap home Teigl’s square pass. Teigl missed a chance to get on the scoresheet himself and then Gundelfingen had their best chance to score shortly before the break. Jozo Stanic gave away a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area and Elias Weicher fired the resulting shot on Andreas Luthe’s bar. FCA took a deserved 3-0 lead into half-time. Three second half as completely changed FCA build upon lead FCA head coach Martin Schmidt made eleven changes at half-time and a completed different side started the second half. Fabian Giefer, Jan Moravek, Iago, Carlos Gruezo, André Hahn, Maurice Malone, Dorian Cevis, Stefano Russo, Adrien Koudelka, Christopher Lannert and Lukas Petkov were the new players for the second half. FCA started the second half as they finished the first and it took little over a minute for the Fuggerstädter to find a fourth goal. Academy product Dorian Cevis headed home to give Augsburg the perfect start to the second half. Things nearly got even better for the academy players as Maurice Malone was denied by a good save by Dennis Ortner in the Gundelfingen goal. However, another academy player turned provider in the 56th minute as Augsburg scored their fifth of the evening. Christopher Lannert placed an accurate cross into the box and André Hahn rose highest to head home. Ten minutes later, Lukas Petkov added his name to the scoresheet as Augsburg scored the final goal of the evening (66’). In the final third of the match, Gundelfingen went in search of a consolation but were unable to break down a resolute Augsburg defence. FCA ended their first friendly of the summer as deserved 6-0 winners.
