Dahmen: “I was pleased about the trust put it me”
Reaction from the 1-0 defeat to Stuttgart
FC Augsburg suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to VfB Stuttgart in their first match of 2025 at the WWK ARENA. Here’s all the reaction from the game.
Elvis Rexhbecaj: “It was an intensive 90 minutes. Stuttgart were in control at the start, then we pressed high and won the ball back well a few times, but we didn’t make enough of these. We wanted to be more active in the game, including without the ball, and we managed that well in phases. In the end though, we’ve finished with zero goals and zero points. Obviously, we’re disappointed, because we put a lot into that, but we have to keep playing with this courage and be more clinical, especially with the final pass.”
Finn Dahmen: “We needed a bit of time to get into the game. After that, we did okay, but we couldn’t take our chances. We have to be more clinical. Of course I was pleased about the trust put it me that meant I started in goal for the first time in this Bundesliga season. I’ve worked hard for that over the last weeks and months. Now, we’ve got two away games ahead of us. We have to approach them with confidence.”
Noahkai Banks: “As everything happened so quickly, I didn’t have much time to feel nervous. The coach told me to enjoy it and play my game, and my teammates have always supported me too. I was happy to be on the pitch and focused on my game. Unfortunately, we lost, but I was happy with my debut overall. It’ll probably be a few days before it hits home that I’ve played in the Bundesliga. It was definitely extra special because my mother was in the stands.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate the opponents. They started the game really well and we struggled to put them under pressure. From the halfway point of the first half onwards, we improved, pressed high and won the ball back well on a few occasions. In this period of momentum, we didn’t manage to turn our chances into goals. In the second half too, we kept working hard, which obviously makes the 1-0 defeat even more painful. At the end of the day, I’m happy with my team’s performance, though obviously not with the result.”
Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart head coach): “We started well, played with a high tempo and defended strongly, but we didn’t score. Towards the end of the first half, we lost control of the game a bit and Augsburg came back into it. After the break, we improved again and Deniz scored the winning goal. That was incredibly important and we then defended well until the end. That’s why I think it was a good result. It was a difficult challenge, as we’d expected.”
