Bénes in focus: technical player with a dream debut
Reunited with former teammates Strobl and Hahn
FC Augsburg completed the loan signing of László Bénes from Borussia Mönchengladbach on the last day of the January transfer window. The 23-year-old Slovakian has had an eventful few years following his dream debut in the Bundesliga. Here, we focus on the midfielder in detail.
László Bénes could not have dreamed of a better debut in the Bundesliga. In April 2017, the then 19-year-old made his first appearance for Borussia Mönchengladbach against Hertha BSC and introduced himself by netting after just 15 minutes. His strike would be the only goal of the game, ensuring that the Foals took all three points.
It was a promising start for the Slovakian and the next few years had plenty of ups and downs. Borussia bought the talented youngster one year earlier from Slovakian club MSK Zilina, but Bénes was unable to cement his place in Gladbach’s midfield despite making plenty more appearances. A large part of this was the repeated injury setbacks that plagued the gifted left-footer.
Bénes flourishes during loan spell in Kiel
During the winter of 2019, the Foals finally sent Bénes to Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga 2 on a six-month loan, where he attracted attention with two goals and six assists. When he returned to Mönchengladbach he found himself in the team more often, being played in a midfield diamond. In the Kicker ranking from last year, Bénes was named as one of the league’s most conspicuous players in attacking midfield, writing “Bénes has convinced with his skill and ability from set-pieces.”
Last season however, the 23-year-old found himself struggling for minutes against a number of other midfielders at Gladbach. The three-time international has now joined FCA on a six-month loan, where he will be reunited with Tobias Strobl and André Hahn, both of whom he played with at Borussia.
“This is a move that I’m very keen on,” emphasises Bénes. “The most important thing for me is to play the most minutes possible. Alongside that, I want to do everything I can to help the team with my qualities.” The midfielder names his technique and attacking play as two of those qualities. “I like to play passes from deep and also look to score myself.” Hopefully his second Bundesliga goal will come soon!
