FC Augsburg secured their first ever home victory against Borussia Dortmund on Friday night, giving a courageous performance to secure a 2-1 win in the WWK ARENA. “I’m proud of what the team brought to today’s match,” said a delighted Manuel Baum after the match. Here is the post match reaction.
Gregor Kobel: “The match started superbly for me and I’m pleased that I was able to help the team with some good passes. Over the course of the entire week, we have prepared for this matchr really well and never ruled out taking something against a team like Dortmund. We’ve had an amazing evening, showing a lot of character and we need to carry this into the coming weeks.”
Dong-Won Ji, who scored both Augsburg goals: “We played really well tonight. We fought hard, showed a good mentality, a desire to win and played together as a team. We are simply delighted to have played in the way we did. Dortmund is a superb team and of course the goals were particularly special. We want to carry this performance into our forthcoming matches.”
André Hahn: “We have made it clear this week that we have to make our performances count in the battle against relegation. We showed that desire tonight and battled superbly. These are three precious points. We have a long way to go and we have to build on this performance if we want to avoid relegation.”
Daniel Baier: “Of course the relief is huge. The victory tonight was extremely important and I’m delighted for the fans and the whole club. We suffered a lot of heartbreak so far this season so it was especially important for us to return to winning ways tonight. It’s been a long time since we’ve felt like this after a victory!”
Kevin Danso: “We made it very difficult for Borussia Dortmund and played very well. Dong-Won Ji and Gregor Kobel were incredible tonight but we were all fully focused on the task at hand. We have to bring that performance to each of our remaining matches this season.”
Manuel Baum: “I need a moment or two to breathe after such an exhilarating match. We wanted to show a reaction as a team to the disappointing result in Freiburg. We also wanted to give the fans something to cheers about and you could see how we pressed against Dortmund to get a positive result. This is what Augsburg stands for. After conceding, we continued to be positive and held on for a much needed victory. I am very proud of what the team showed tonight.”
Lucien Favre: “We played okay tonight but created five or six very good chances to score and we didn’t take any of them. We also made several unnecessary mistakes. We didn’t actually Augsburg many chances to score, yet we have still come away with a defeat. We have to accept the result and move on.”
