Baum: “I’m delighted for the team, but most importantly for the fans.”
At the end of a turbulent week, FC Augsburg have secured a 3-0 home victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and ended their winless run. “It was a really good game for the whole 90 minutes,” said Augsburg head coach Manuel Baum regarding his team’s performance. Here is the post match reaction.
Daniel Baier: “A lot happened this week and we wanted to hit the headlines for the right reasons on the pitch today. You could see this from the moment we walked out onto the pitch. We attacked for most of the match today and are simply delighted to have won after the disappointment of recent weeks. It was a super sign from the team of how we have dealt with the situations off the pitch. Our fans were also fantastic and it was amazing to see how they have supported us through this difficult time.”
Alfred Finnbogason, who scored a hat-trick in the victory: “It was very important for us to come together as a team and it is really positive to keep a clean sheet. We have put a hectic week behind us with all of us giving the perfect answer on the pitch today. We have finally played well for the full 90 minutes and took our chances well. We now need some stability, but today was a good first step.”
Kevin Danso: “From the very first minute, we played well today. This was especially important considering what has happened this week. We are pleased to have kept a clean sheet today.”
Michael Gregoritsch: “Today was a important step in the right direction for us. We have to now remain patient and continue to go in the right direction. We are fully satisfied with our performance today and how we won the match. In recent weeks, we have spoken a lot about working together as a team, and we showed that today.”
Manuel Baum: “I’m delighted for the team but most importantly for our fans. I want to say thank you to them and pay them a compliment for how they have supported us through a tricky week. We said before the match that today was a big opportunity for us to show the character we have. That was evident today. Augsburg stands together. This is not just a phrase but also is a fundamental part of our club. It was a really good game for the whole 90 minutes, in which the players did exactly what was expected of them. We had a good balance between pressing situations and playing longer balls.”
Mainz head coach Sandro Schwarz: “It was a fully deserved victory for Augsburg and we needed a day like this. We didn’t match the level of performance compared to our previous meeting earlier this season. We didn’t respond to falling behind early and we fully deserved to lose.”
