Baum: “A superb performance defensively”
Rani Khedira described FC Augsburg’s 0-0 draw at home to RB Leipzig as “no walk in the park.” Neither side could find a breakthrough in a fiercely competitive match on FCA’s retro matchday to celebrate exactly 111 years since the club’s first ever match. Here are the post match interviews with the players and the coaches.
Michael Gregoritsch: “The celebrations off the pitch for our retro matchday were very special, but you cannot sadly say the same about what happened on the pitch. The manner in which both teams played today was not either side aspired to do. However, it really was incredible how the fans got behind the teams and celebrated our anniversary. The match they saw today was not worthy of the occasion.”
Rani Khedira: “For large spells, today’s match was a disappointing affair with very few chances in front of goal. It was astonishing to see a top team like Leipzig run out of ideas against us today. They were unable to break us down. We are pleased to have taken a deserved point out of today’s match but it certainly wasn’t easy for the fans this afternoon.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “I think both teams will be satisfied with a point from today’s match. Unfortunately we didn’t get that little bit of luck we needed to score today. We operated a successful long ball game today and we showed once again that we can cause problems for the best teams in the Bundesliga.”
Andreas Luthe: “It was a very hectic match where both teams lacked the composure necessary to find the breakthrough in front of goal. However, a point against Leipzig is a still a good result and it also is the right result based on the balance of play.”
Daniel Baier: “Everyone had expected today’s match to be spectacular based on how we have played in recent matches. No-one probably predicted it to end in a goalless stalemate. It was a fiercely competitive match with a lot of fouls against a very strong Leipzig side. The highlight of the match was probably the long delay for the penalty to be overturned by the video assistant. We are pleased to have taken a point out of today’s match.”
FCA head coach Manuel Baum: “There were a lot of fouls given today, as if every challenge was deemed a foul. This prevented any rhythm to flow during the match. I saw a superb performance defensively from the team today as we barely allowed Leipzig to get a chance in front of goal. We lost the ball too frequently in attack but I remain positive and am pleased that we kept a clean sheet.”
RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick: “There were not many chances in front of goal and this is a shame for the supporters who came to today’s match. As a coach it is good to see a good defensive display as you barely allow anything through and this is important. We lacked the precision necessary in front of goal but we will take a point. We overcame a couple of surprising moments very well in today’s match.”
