Demirović and Winther got the decisive goals on Friday
FC Augsburg beat Heidenheim by two goals to nil on Friday in the second friendly of the winter break. Demirović and Winther got the decisive goals on a snowy afternoon in Augsburg.
FCA were full of confidence going into the game following the 3-0 win over Grasshoppers just under a week ago. Enrico Maaßen used several youngsters on Friday afternoon, with Mert Kömür and Mahmut Kücüksahin even getting a place in the starting XI.
The Fuggerstädter were well on top in the opening stages and they didn’t look fazed by the harsh weather conditions. It also didn’t take long for Maaßen’s side to find the first goal of the game. In the 18th minute, Maximilian Bauer played a long ball up the field to find Robert Gumny, who moved his way into the penalty area. The Pole crossed to find Ermedin Demirović, who had no problem slotting the ball home (1-0). A few moments later, Florian Pick looked to get his side back in the game, but his effort was no trouble for Rafał Gikiewicz (21’).
The gaffer was forced into his first change midway through the first half when Florian Niederlechner picked up a slight knock and was replaced by Franjo Ivanovic. FCA remained in control and kept their opponents well away from their goal. Augsburg came close to doubling their lead shortly before break, when Kömur’s shot ricocheted into the path of Elvis Rexhbecaj, but the midfielder narrowly missed the target (42’).
The boss made three changes at the break and the fresh legs nearly paid off straight away, when Mads Pedersen only just missed the target with a cross-cum-shot (47’). Heidenheim, who also made several changes at half time, sat deep, as Augsburg looked to take control of the contest with their passing game. FCH’s top scorer Tim Kleindienst had his first real opportunity of the contest just after the hour-mark, but he couldn’t quite test the goalkeeper with his shot on the turn (61’).
Davide Dell’Erba and Josue Mbila replaced Kücüksahin and Kömür in the 73rd minute, as the boss looked to give more youngsters some game time. The next chance fell to Aaron Zehnter, but his left-footed effort from 20 yards went over the top. Mbila then picked out Daniel Caligiuri in the penalty area following a fine piece of dribbling, but the veteran couldn’t find the net. It was centre-back Frederik Winther, however, who scored the all important second goal when he tapped in from close range from a corner kick (85’). It was an overall satisfying afternoon for Maaßen’s side, who in the end comfortably dispatched promotion chasers Heidenheim.
The players will take part in two public training sessions on Monday and Tuesday before taking a break over Christmas. They will then travel to Algorfa for a training camp which is set to begin on 4th January.
