April: Picking up important points

Review of the year 2023

First Team 25.12.2023, 09:07

Another year is coming to an end: 365 days of both highs and lows, but above all a host of memorable moments for FC Augsburg. It’s time once more to reflect on the past twelve months. In part four of FCA’s review of the year, we look back on April.

After the fortnight-long international break, FC Augsburg faced VfL Wolfsburg. FCA lead for long periods in the club’s 400th Bundesliga match and led 2-0 at half time, thanks to an own goal and Berisha’s ninth goal of the season. However, Augsburg could not hold onto their lead and Wolfsburg managed to find an equaliser in stoppage time.

FCA lost their first home fixture of 2023 on Easter weekend against their rivals in the standings Köln (3-1 defeat, with Vargas netting FCA’s only goal). There were several activities planned around the matchday to mark the Augsburg’s flagship forest project, which is taking place between Wertach and Singold not far from the WWK ARENA. The second tree-planting campaign also took place the following week, with members, fan club representatives, management, committee representatives, partners and sponsors as well as the FCA professionals, academy players and the women’s and girl’s teams all taking part.

Draws against Stuttgart and Frankfurt

Next up for FCA was an away game in Leipzig. Despite an early goal from Maier and a late strike from Vargas, Enrico Maaßen’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat. Things were to get better at home: FCA were once again in action on a Friday night when VfB Stuttgart were the visitors on matchday 29. After winning all three of their previous Friday evening games during the course of the season, FCA at least picked up a point on this occasion following a 1-1 draw (Beljo, 8’) against their direct rivals in the relegation battle.

FCA’s next away game followed on the final weekend in April: Maaßen’s side conceded an unlucky own goal, but showed heart and battled away to pick up an important point following Ermedin Demirović’s equaliser. This was FCA’s seventh draw of the season at the time.
