“A childhood dream come true”: Kömür makes Bundesliga debut
First appearance in Sinsheim
Despite ending in a 3-1 loss, FC Augsburg’s recent away match against TSG Hoffenheim was a game to remember for Mert Kömür. FCA’s academy product made his long-awaited Bundesliga debut when he came on in the 75th minute.
“It’s a childhood dream come true for me,” gushed Kömür when interviewed after the game. Even though the 18-year-old was disappointed with the result, the overriding emotion was the pride he felt after making his first appearance in the top-division of German football. “I was fully focused in the tunnel. It was a lot of fun,” said the attacker.
Debutant number 12
Kömür became the twelfth player after Erik Thommy, Tim Rieder, Julian Günther-Schmidt, Raphael Framberger, Kevin Danso, Marco Richter, Simon Asta, Jozo Stanic, Tim Civeja, Lukas Petkov und Aaron Zehnter to make the step up from academy to play for FCA in the Bundesliga. The Germany U19 international has been named in Augsburg’s matchday squad on five occasions already this season.
Kömür was initially a member of TSV 1860 München’s academy, before making the switch to FC Augsburg’s youth set-up in the summer of 2019. The young attacker, who is under contract at Augsburg until 30th June 2027, was part of the U19 side that won the A-Junior Bundesliga South/Southwest in 2021/22.
