Niederlechner, Vargas and Gregoritsch score against SSV Jahn
FC Augsburg and SSV Jahn Regensburg played out a goal-rich friendly on Thursday afternoon, the final score being 3-3. An eventful first half saw FCA look to have won the game until the late stages, until the 2. Bundesliga side equalised late on.
Head coach Markus Weinzierl was without Carlos Gruezo and Ricardo Pepi for the game, as they were representing their countries during the international break. Alongside them, goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz also missed out, as he tested positive for Covid-19 – he is asymptomatic and in isolation at home.
FCA were on the front foot from the start, Ruben Vargas firing a warning shot early on (3’). Against the run of play though, it was Jahn who took the lead. An Augsburg mistake in playing out from the back was pounced on by Charalambos Makridis, who scored from close range to make it 1-0 to Regensburg (10’). FCA hit back just two minutes later on the counter, Niederlechner flashing a shot into the far corner to equalise (12’).
Markus Weinzierl’s side kept their upper hand as the half went on; after Finnbogason sent a header wide (24’), the ball found its way into the Regensburg net once again. Vargas set a long ball back for Niederlechner inside the penalty area, who returned the ball to the Swiss international with the goal gaping – he made no mistake in making it 2-1 (26’).
The eventful first half saw Regensburg level the scores yet again before half time. Carlo Boukhalfa crossed in from the right and found Makridis in the centre once again, who finished to make it 2-2 on 35 minutes. There was a clash of heads in front of goal between Lasse Günther and Konrad Faber, the Augsburg player down for several minutes receiving treatment but eventually returning to the pitch with a head bandage.
Weinzierl made a total of nine changes at half time, but that did not prevent FCA from remaining the dominant side; Felix Uduokhai and Jan Morávek both went close in quick succession (59’, 60’). Shortly afterwards, FCA were lucky at the other end, as a deflected David Otto effort crashed off the crossbar (62’).
Despite the let-off, FCA re-took the lead on 69 minutes. Robert Gumny supplied Andi Zeqiri, who fired off the inside of the post, but recent substitute Michael Gregoritsch was in the right place at the right time to put the rebound into the open goal. As the game drew on, Augsburg continued to create good chances. A header from Uduokhai was cleared off the line, and a shot from Tim Civeja flew narrowly wide (75’, 82’). Just before the clock ticked over 90 minutes, Jahn brought the game back once again to 3-3. After Tomáš Koubek brilliantly denied Makridis his hat trick on 85 minutes, he was left without a chance by Kaan Caliskaner (89’).
That was how the thrilling friendly finished; 3-3. The Saturday after next sees FCA’s next game, as they host 1. FC Union Berlin (05/02, 15:30 CET).
