3-0 against Düsseldorf! The run continues!

First Team 17.12.2019, 16:02

FCA continue their good run of form with a 3-0 win against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Tuesday evening. The hosts secured the victory with two second half goals after a deserved lead at half time. The victory over Düsseldorf is now their fifth win in their last six matches.

Head coach Martin Schmidt named an unchanged side from the team that lined up for Friday’s 4-2 win over TSG Hoffenheim. Ruben Vargas returned to the squad after serving his one-match ban, starting the game on the bench.

The game started off as slow burner. FCA were full of confidence after their recent performances but struggled to create any real goal-scoring opportunities. Fortuna had the majority of the possession in the early stages, however FCA had the better of the chances; with Frederik Jensen (2’) and Daniel Baier (16’) coming close early on.

Ayhan comes close – Max scores again

However, as the game went on FCA started to get a hold of the game and attacked with speed and precision. Florian Niederlechner latched onto a through ball but failed to beat Fortuna goalkeeper Zackary Steffen from an acute angle (21’). Meanwhile, Fortuna came dangerously close to opening the scoring, with Kaan Ayhan only a whisker away from getting on the end of a free kick (30’).

However FCA finally managed to take the lead. Niederlechner showed his strength by shrugging off Kasim Adams before releasing a strike on goal. Steffen could only parry the striker’s effort into the path of Philipp Max, who gladly tapped home into an empty net (32’). The hosts then began to control the game, and almost doubled their lead shortly before the break through Iago (45’).

Max at the double – Jedvaj puts the cherry on the cake

Fortuna started the second half with a new lease of life, but FCA remained strong in the tackle and managed to keep the visitors at bay. There were a number of chances for both sides, with Niederlechner (50’) and Kownacki (58’) both coming close for either side. However, FCA knocked the wind out of Fortuna’s sails by doubling their lead through Tin Jedvaj in the 61st minute. The defender nodded Philipp Max’s corner to score his first goal for the club.

Düsseldorf continued to have chances of their own, but Tomàš Koubek rose to the challenge and kept them at bay. Instead, FCA put the game to bed, with Philipp Max getting on the scoresheet once again. The left back netted his fourth goal in just two matches with a 25 yard free kick, fumbled into his own net by Steffen (72’).  FCA closed the game out professionally in the last few minutes to secure a convincing victory.

That’s now five wins out of six for Augsburg, who finish 2019 with a trip to RB Leipzig on Saturday 21st December (15:30 CET).
