Vargas’ Switzerland into Round of 16 after Germany draw
FCA attacker has goal disallowed
Ruben Vargas’ Switzerland are into the Round of 16 of the EUROs. His side conceded a late equaliser against hosts Germany.
Following four points from their first two games, Switzerland had momentum going into their final match of Group A on Sunday evening in Frankfurt. After Vargas had been named in the starting eleven for the 3-1 win over Hungary and the 1-1 draw with Scotland, the FCA attacker this time had to settle for a place on the bench – though the 25-year-old almost won the game for Switzerland late on.
In the 84th minute, Vargas found himself through on goal and calmly slotted past Manuel Neuer with his left foot. This would have made it 2-0 to Switzerland, who had earlier taken the lead through Dan Ndoye (28’). The FCA winger’s strike was however disallowed for a very narrow offside. The game therefore remained in the balance, and Niclas Füllkrug scored a dramatic equaliser for Germany in injury time.
Possible meeting of FCA players in Round of 16
Switzerland ultimately finished second in the group and qualified for the Round of 16. On Saturday, 29th June at 18:00 CEST, Murat Yakin’s team will take on the runners-up of Group B, who will be decided on Monday evening. This could potentially throw up a meeting with FCA new signing Nediljko Labrović, whose Croatia side need a win over Italy in their final group game. The match in Leipzig will kick off at 21:00 CEST.
