Vargas on the scoresheet, second Germany cap for Berisha
Beljo and Čolina win in London
While Ruben Vargas and Switzerland got a comfortable win against Israel, Mergim Berisha and Germany suffered defeat against Belgium in Cologne.
Switzerland’s 3-0 win against Israel has strengthened their position at the top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group. FCA’s Ruben Vargas volleyed home the opening goal in the 39th minute and went on to play 74 minutes in Geneva.
Three days after making his Germany debut against Peru, Mergim Berisha won his second cap against Belgium. Hansi Flick’s team went 2-0 down early on in front of 42,910 fans in Cologne, but improved in the second half. Berisha was involved in the move for Serge Gnabry’s goal in the 87th minute, though Germany still lost the game 3-2.
Beljo scores a penalty
Croatia U21s picked up a surprise 2-1 victory away to England at Craven Cottage. The Augsburg pair Dion Beljo and David Čolina both started at Fulham’s ground in the west of London. Beljo made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute. Renato Veiga lost 3-0 with Portugal U20s in Czech Republic.
Ermedin Demirović played the full 90 minutes in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 2-0 defeat to Slovakia on Sunday. Fredrik Jensen didn’t feature in Finland’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland, while Robert Gumny was also not used in Poland’s 1-0 win over Albania. Arne Engels came on at half time for Belgium U21s in a 3-2 victory against Japan.
FCA youngsters impress
Mert Kömür, who signed a professional contract with FCA at the start of February, scored his first goal for Germany U18s in a 3-0 win over France, having only come off the bench in injury time in the first meeting (4-3 defeat). U17s player Franz Bleicher played twice for Germany U16s against Italy, with both games ending 1-1.
