Thorup: “Continue this positive trend”
FCA travel to BVB
FC Augsburg are unbeaten in their last eight Bundesliga games. While Jess Thorup’s side hope to extend that run to nine and set a new club record, a real challenge awaits them away at Borussia Dortmund.
“It will be a good test to see where we stand,” said Thorup. His team put in another strong performance in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Champions League-chasing SC Freiburg, but they were lacking that clinical edge in front of goal. “The past is the past. We’re only looking ahead,” insisted the boss, who is delighted with the Fuggerstädter’s defensive stability in recent weeks. FCA have kept a clean sheet in six of the last eight games during this unbeaten run, including each of the last four – a new personal best for goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.
Despite Augsburg sitting just three points behind Dortmund in the table, Thorup is under no illusions that his side go into the game as underdogs. Nevertheless, the Dane wants to “continue this positive trend” and hopes for a result like in the reverse fixture, when Alexis Claude-Maurice’s brace secured a 2-1 victory.
1,700 FCA fans in Dortmund
The mood among the squad is very positive, which has been palpable all week in training. “You can feel spring coming, the sun is shining, and the team are glowing with confidence,” said Thorup. Around 100 fans watched on at Wednesday’s open training session, including a number of youngsters who were keen to get their heroes’ autographs at the end of training. Kristijan Jakić sat out due to a groin problem, although he is expected to be available on Saturday. It means that FCA should have the same squad at their disposal as they did against Freiburg.
FCA have been waiting since 2015 to taste victory in Dortmund. They will certainly have vocal support behind them for the trip to BVB, with over 1,700 fans expected at the Signal Iduna Park.
