Thorup: “A step in the right direction”

Reaction from the 2-2 draw in Frankfurt

FC Augsburg drew 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt after a hard-fought 90 minutes. Here’s all the reaction from the game.

Phillip Tietz: “We played an intensive game in Karlsruhe three days ago, and everyone knows how much quality Eintracht Frankfurt have. We did really well and are pleased with the point. We didn’t go into our shells after falling behind and eventually deserved to take the lead. During our best spell, we were winning all of the individual battles and second balls and being really clinical on the counter. Sadly, we then conceded the equaliser. I turned my back on it so it wouldn’t hit my hand and unfortunately it deflected in off me. Frankfurt are having a great season, and we’ve got a point there after the Pokal win.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj: “The supporters saw an even first half, when we had a few good attacks. Frankfurt put us under more pressure after half time and took the lead. We didn’t let that knock the wind out of our sails though and we turned the game around. It’s a shame that we couldn’t hold on to the lead for longer. The Pokal match took a lot out of us, but we’ve still managed to get a point here.”

Samuel Essende: “We worked together well as a team against one of the best sides in the league. We never gave up, even after going behind, and scored two goals. We deserved this point in Frankfurt.”

Nediljko Labrović: “Frankfurt are one of the best teams in the league. We were well-prepared. It was a hard-fought game where both teams had quite a few chances. In the end, 2-2 is an okay result. Now, we’re preparing to face another top team next week when Leverkusen travel to Augsburg.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “That was an improved performance, because we weren’t just strong defensively, but also had some really good attacks. I think it was a 50-50 game which could have gone either way. Frankfurt put us under pressure after half time and took the lead, but we fought our way back thanks to our belief and team spirit and scored two goals. Overall, the draw is an okay result. That was a step in the right direction.”

Dino Toppmöller (Eintracht Frankfurt head coach): “We started the game well, but we were a little bit sloppy. After the break, we threw everything at it once again following an energy-sapping few weeks, and took the lead. We then felt like we were on the road to victory. However, Augsburg equalised and then took the lead almost out of nothing. We reacted well though and could even have won the game in the end. Even though we’re not satisfied with this result, we can be proud when we look at the table, because we’re still in second with 27 points.”
