Thorup: “A deserved victory for Leverkusen”
Reaction from the 2-0 defeat to Leverkusen
Augsburg were unable to get anything out of their final home game of 2024, as they were beaten by an efficient performance from Leverkusen. Here’s all the reaction after the defeat to Bayer.
Keven Schlotterbeck: “Leverkusen controlled the game from the start and took the lead with their first shot on goal. We did a lot well after that, but the second goal was like a sucker punch for us. We had a few discussions at half time and started the second period better. We had some decent attacks, but overall we were too unadventurous and not clinical enough in our play. Our performance wasn’t good enough to get a result against the German champions, even if we did alright for long periods.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We actually started the game well, but then Leverkusen showed their quality. They scored two goals from two half chances. We wanted to get ourselves back into the game by scoring a goal of our own in the second half, but we just weren’t able to do that. We had a few chances, like the goal which was narrowly offside, but in general we were missing that cutting edge. Now, we want to win in Kiel so we can go into the winter break feeling positive.”
Nediljko Labrović: “We didn’t concede a lot of chances, but Leverkusen don’t need a lot of chances. They were very efficient and scored two goals. We’ve now lost at home, so we need to make up for that by finally getting three points on the road. It’ll be tough away in Kiel, but it’s our aim.”
Marius Wolf: “You could tell that Leverkusen were very strong opponents. They were good on the ball and scored two goals from two chances. We could still have hit back at them in the second half, and with a bit of luck we would have scored form one of our set pieces and got back in the game. That just didn’t happen for us today though.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “This was a deserved victory for Leverkusen. We’d hoped that we’d be able to show how good we are at home and get a positive result. Sadly, we couldn’t manage that against a strong opponent. We didn’t concede many chances over the 90 minutes, but we were already 2-0 down at half time. Overall, we put in a few crosses and set pieces, but it wasn’t enough to come back into it. In the end, it’s not the result that we wanted for our final home game of 2024. Now, we have just one aim in Kiel: that first away win.”
Xabi Alonso (Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach): “We’re very pleased with the result and the performance. We played well and had a good mindset. It was important that we knew it wouldn’t be easy in Augsburg. I’m very happy with how we went about it.”
