September: First win of the season against Gladbach
Review of the year 2021, part nine
As the new year comes in, FC Augsburg are taking a look back over the last 12 months. Next up in the review of the year: September.
Following a two-week international break, FCA travelled to the capital to take on 1. FC Union Berlin. Just like the first away game of the new season, this one ended goalless – despite chances for both sides. Rafał Gikiewicz and ex-Augsburg man Andreas Luthe both kept clean sheets at the Alte Försterei on matchday 4.
Meanwhile, things were going better for the U23s, who were enjoying a five-game unbeaten run. The highlight was a win at home to Wacker Burghausen, with Sepp Steinberger’s team coming from 1-0 down to beat the side in third 3-1.
Niederlechner comes off the bench to score
The first team’s next match was at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Unlike the two previous matches in Augsburg this term, the defence was impenetrable. Florian Niederlechner came off the bench to score a late winner (1-0), backing up the coach’s prediction that exactly this would happen.
FCA couldn’t back up the first win of the season a week later away to SC Freiburg. In their final game at their old Dreisamstadion, the hosts comfortably beat Augsburg 3-0. FCA won’t miss the old ground much given their poor record there…
