Ruben Vargas moves to Sevilla
Six months before the end of his contract

Ruben Vargas has left FC Augsburg to join Spanish top-flight side Sevilla with immediate effect. The 26-year-old Swiss winger had recently told the club that he would not be extending his contract in Augsburg, which was due to expire this summer. As a result, Vargas has now departed the Fuggerstädter six months before the end of his contract. The clubs have agreed that the details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.
Vargas arrived at FC Augsburg aged 20 in the 2019/20 season from FC Luzern, giving him his first taste of the Bundesliga and he quickly broke into the Swiss national team. Overall, the attacker played 161 games in all competitions for FCA, scoring 23 goals and recording 19 assists. The Switzerland international played eight times in the Bundesliga this season, without having a hand in a goal. He scored the last-minute equaliser at Karlsruhe in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal to take the game to a penalty shootout, which FCA then won to progress to the quarter-finals.
“We’d have liked to have extended Ruben’s contract before the last transfer window, but he recently informed us that he didn’t want to do so. Since we also bear an economic responsibility for the club, we jointly sought a solution that makes sense for both parties. We’d like to thank Ruben for his commitment over many years for FCA and wish him all the best in Spain,” explained FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
“I’ve said on several occasions that I feel ready for the next step in my career. After five and a half years at FC Augsburg, I want the challenge of playing in a different league. I would like to thank the club for our positive discussions and for enabling me to move to Sevilla right away. I always felt right at home at FCA and will have fond memories of my time in Augsburg. I wish FCA all the best for the future,” said Ruben Vargas.
