An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In eleventh part of our series, we look at November.

November began with a busy week with multiple matchdays, with FC Augsburg hosting Eintracht Frankfurt at the WWK ARENA. Despite a lightning fast start, with Mergim Berisha rifling the ball into the Eintracht net after exactly 35 seconds, FCA ultimately were condemned to a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Next up were this season’s surprise package, Union Berlin. The game developed into an end-to-end affair and it finished 2-2, with all four goals scored in the first half. Florian Niederlechner grabbed a brace for the Red-Green-Whites in his 100th Bundesliga game.

In the last game before the World Cup and the winter break, FC Augsburg finished the year at home against VfL Bochum - and suffered a bitter 1-0 loss against the league’s 17th placed side, meaning that FCA will be 14th at Christmas and over winter. Maaßen’s team sit on 15 points after as many matchdays, with the season to continue on 22nd January 2023 with an away match at Borussia Dortmund.

Successful first general meeting

Right after the last Bundesliga matchday in 2022, FC Augsburg held their annual general meeting in the Business Club of the WWK ARENA. New president Markus Krapf presided over proceedings for the first time, and the evening saw around 850 members get up to speed with the FCA’s most recent year and its current situation.

Gumny, Gruezo and Vargas at the World Cup

A few days later, the World Cup got underway, with three FCA players representing their home countries. With Ecuador, Carlos Gruezo took on the host country, the Netherlands and Senegal in the group stage. Ruben Vargas, playing for Switzerland, faced Cameroon, Brazil and Serbia. Last but not least for FCA at the World Cup was Robert Gumny, who was called up for Poland, and took on Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Argentina. 

Bauer, Zehnter and Malone play for German youth teams

A further trio of Augsburg players were also in action in November. Tomáš Koubek played for the Czech Republic, while Maximilian Bauer linked up with the Germany U21 national team. Aaron Zehnter jetted off with Germany's U19s to the Four Nations Tournament in Malta and went on to win the tournament. 

Also nominated for the Germany U21 side was Maurice Malone, who is currently on loan from FCA to Austrian first division club Wolfsberger AC.
