Maaßen: “I’m proud of my team”
Reaction to the win against Bayern
The Bavarian derby on Saturday afternoon saw FC Augsburg come away with a sensational 1-0 victory over FC Bayern München. After the game, head coach Enrico Maaßen was thrilled with the result: “We earned the right to take something from this game today.” Here is all the reaction to the win against the German record champions.
Mergim Berisha: “Games and goals like this are ones you just never forget. It will be a wonderful memory for me, scoring my first ever Bundesliga goal against FC Bayern. The more important thing, though, is that my goal helped the team get three points. We knew we had to hold our own against them, and we played bravely and gave our all. And with Rafał between the sticks we have a goalkeeper who can win us games with his saves.“
André Hahn: “That’s the FCA I know and love! We played with a lot of passion and heart today – we need to make that more instinctive from now on. We’re on a very good path at the moment and whilst it’s clear that not everything is perfect, this win will do us the world of good. We just wanted to play football today, and we did that.”
Rafał Gikiewicz: “It’s just a fantastic feeling to have won twice in a row at home against FC Bayern. We knew that we needed to have a top performance and a little bit of luck, and that all came together today. We just did very well. I also have to pay a compliment to our fans today – they really created a fantastic atmosphere. Hopefully, we can play in front of a full house more often now.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We were one unit on the pitch today, and you could definitely see that. Everybody fought for everyone else and we gave our all. It’s always going to be impossible to defend every single thing a side like Bayern throw at you, but whatever came past us in defence was dealt with by Rafał. The decisive thing, though, was that we were brave going forward and created our own chances – we want to keep going on that path.”
Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann: “Congratulations to FCA on the win. We let a lot of things get away from us here and gifted them a lot of space. In the second half we then conceded a set-piece, and in Augsburg it’s extremely difficult to come back from that.”
Enrico Maaßen: “I’m proud of my team for this courageous performance. We went in with a high-risk strategy, but we didn’t just want to defend, we wanted to attack too – that’s the only way you can beat Bayern. We had to suffer at times, chased the ball a lot and also let some big chances slip through the net. We know how to do better there, so we’ll keep our feet on the ground and carry on working at it. That said, the way we played out there meant we earned the right to take something from the game – the fact it was all three points is even better.”
