Schlotterbeck: “Both sides battled hard”
Match reaction after the 0-0 draw in Mainz
FC Augsburg played out their first goalless draw of the season away in Mainz on Saturday afternoon. We heard the thoughts of the FCA players and the two coaches after the match.
Finn Dahmen: “We knew what we’d be up against here. It’s never easy coming to Mainz, particularly given they’d won their last five home games. We put up some great resistance, even if it meant it wasn’t the greatest match to watch. However, it was a really good battle and the draw is a fair result. I spent almost three-quarters of my life in Mainz, so it’s always special coming back here.”
Mert Kömür: “We can be happy going home with a point. It was a tough match with a lot of second balls and challenges. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get a goal from the few chances we had. We often lacked precision in the final third. We will do all we can on Friday to come away with victory against Leipzig.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “Mainz had more of the ball in the first half and some good chances. We upped our game after the break and then we had the better opportunities. Both sides battled hard today. It was important that we were able to get another clean sheet.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Since the winter break, we’ve shown that we can be solid defensively. We have to be more creative going forward still though. We’re lacking incision in attack, even though we had the better openings towards the end. It was a game with lots of long passes and battles for second balls. It probably wasn’t the best to watch, but we’ll happily take the point.”
Cédric Zesiger: “Our main focus was to be solid defensively, although we can obviously improve a bit up front. I’m here to help the team and the strengthen the defence, and I’m positionally versatile. We’re unbeaten in five Bundesliga games now. That gives us confidence and we want to show that on Friday against Leipzig with our fans behind us.”
Jess Thorup: “Mainz were the better side in the first half, looking at the chances. However, we defended well and knew that it would be a hectic game. It was our third away game in the space of a week and we have a number of injured and sick players. We significantly upped our performance in the second half, showed more courage and created chances. With a little bit more luck, we could have taken all three points, but we can be happy with one at the end of the day. Mainz had won their last five home games against strong opponents. We’ve picked up eight points on the road since the winter break and kept three clean sheets – that shows that we’re on the right track.”
1. FSV Mainz 05 head coach Bo Henriksen: “I’m happy with the first half; we were the better side against a team that had prepared well. However, we lacked quality in possession after the break and struggled to create chances. It was a 50-50 match in the second half. We need to learn how to turn games like those in our favour.”
