First Team 19.08.2017, 19:28
FC Augsburg have started their seventh Bundesliga season with a loss. In a closely contested match, FC Augsburg were defeated 1-0 by Hamburger SV thanks to an early goal from Nicolai Müller. For the first Bundesliga game of the season, FCA head coach Manuel Baum opted to make two changes from the side who lost in the DFB Pokal fixture against Magdeburg. Ja-Cheol Koo started in midfield instead of Rani Khedira with Caiuby replacing Marcel Heller on the left wing. The match saw Hamburg attacker Andre Hahn face his former club as well as a return to Hamburg for new FCA signing Michael Gregoritsch. Walace’s cross found Nicolai Müller who volleyed into the bottom corner in the 8th minute. The goal came straight after Caiuby’s goal bound effort was blocked by Dennis Diekmeier. Later on in the first half, Alfred Finnbogason met Philipp Max’s cross with his head from close range but Christian Mathenia in the Hamburg goal was able to smother. After HSV were set the initial tone of the match, FCA began to come into the ascendancy. Augsburg began to have success on the wings but the team were never able to create any truly dangerous chances. Ten minutes before half time, FCA pressed for an equaliser and penned the hosts in their own half. However, HSV were able to ride the wave of Augsburg attacks. In the 43rd minute, Max narrowly hit a shot wide and, one minute later, Finnbogason was brought down n the penalty area but the referee decided to not blow his whistle. After half time, Marwin Hitz was nearly caught out by a HSV counter attack as his blocked clearance allowed Aaron Hunt to shoot at an open goal from distance but shot was also fortunately deflected. With an hour gone, the hosts’ opportunity for a second goal came. Hahn met Hunt’s free-kick with his head but was unable to steer it past Hitz. FCA chased equaliser, HSV hit on the counter Augsburg were clearly pressing in the second half but lacked the ability to break through the defence, while HSV decided to hit FCA on the counter attack. Walace had two efforts for HSV on the break but Hitz was able to block them. Following the introduction of new attackers Sergio Córdova and Erik Thommy from the substitutes’ bench, FCA looked ever more likely to get an equaliser but lacked the end product. Eventually, the final whistle blew and Augsburg had been defeated.
