2024 Year in Review, part 6

Another year is coming to an end: 12 eventful months of both highs and lows, along with plenty of memorable moments for FC Augsburg. It's time to once more reflect on the past 365 days. In part six of FCA's Year in Review, we look back on June.

Transfer news: FC Augsburg continued to work on strengthening their squad ahead of the club’s 14th top-flight campaign. Goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović was brought in from Croatian first-division side HKN Rijeka. Meanwhile, FCA academy shot-stopper Marcel Lubik was loaned to Polish second-division side GKS Tychy for the remainder of the season. Having previously been on loan at SV Wehen Wiesbaden, Lasse Günter joined Karlsruher SC on loan during the summer.

Having been at the club since 2021/22, Arne Maier put pen to paper on a contract extension with FCA that would keep him at the club until June 2026. Additionally, the Függestädter brought in Congolese striker Samuel Essende. Defender Keven Schlotterbeck was also brought in from SC Freiburg.

In a show of support for Raphael Framberger, who is currently recovering from his third ACL tear, the club agreed to extend his contract by an additional year as well. Together with Tomáš Koubek, the club came to the decision to not extend his contract, allowing the goalkeeper to look for a new challenge elsewhere after five years in Augsburg.

International duty: Ruben Vargas and summer signing Nediljko Labrović were both off representing their countries at EURO 2024 in Germany. Labrović and Croatia failed to progress past the group stage, while Vargas and Switzerland made it all the way to the quarter-finals.

Switzerland finished second in Group A after an unbeaten group stage campaign (5 points) and came up against defending champions Italy in the round of 16. Vargas contributed a goal and an assist to the Nati’s sensational 2-0 win at the OIympiastadion in Berlin, putting them through to the quarter-finals.

Off the pitch: After being in operation for nearly 20 years, FCA closed their official fan shop on Bahnhofstraße, and instead opened up a pop-up store in the City-Galerie.
