An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the sixth part of our series, we look at June.

After Markus Weinzierl resigned as coach on the last matchday of last season, FC Augsburg recruited Enrico Maaßen in June as his successor, the absolute ideal candidate for the position. The 38-year-old, who most recently led Borussia Dortmund's reserves into the third division and established them there, reached an agreement with FCA to take over the first team for several years, with an agreement also reached with Borussia Dortmund on his move.

The head coach appointment was not the only personnel move. After extensive talks, the decision was taken to not extend the contracts of Jan Morávek and Alfred Finnbogason. As Maaßen decided to bring Sebastian Block, his assistant from Borussia Dortmund II, with him, coaches Tobias Zeller and Reiner Maurer’s deals were also not extended.

As for the squad, FCA retained Arne Maier, who had previously been on loan from Hertha BSC. He signed a permanent, long-term contract. Another new signing was Maximilian Bauer from SpVgg Greuther Fürth, whose services had been secured by Augsburg on a pre-contract during the previous winter transfer window.

FCA host friendlies in the region

As part of the 2022/23 pre-season, FC Augsburg played a series of friendlies, which, for the first time in two years, were accompanied by a full crowd – and for this reason, the club chose to hold them predominantly in the local area. One particular match took place at the Rosenaustadion against Bayernliga side, and long-time local rivals, TSV Schwaben Augsburg – which saw FCA run out 5-0 winners.
