Jensen: “These are the moments I play football for!”
Reaction to the home win against Hoffenheim
Friday night’s 1-0 win at home to TSG Hoffenheim saw FC Augsburg continue their faultless record at the WWK Arena since the winter break. “The feeling after a Friday night like this is just fantastic,” said Fredrik Jensen, whose goal two minutes from time secure the three points. Read on for all the post-match reactions.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “This win has really given us some self-confidence! We simply earned the three points today and it’s a fantastic feeling to have kept another clean sheet. We had a bit of bad luck in the first half with the disallowed goal, but for me, our goal in the second half has to count. As a defender, you get into duels like that all the time in games; it’s just not a foul. What counts at the end of the day is that we have earned the win in a six-pointer against one of our direct opponents.”
Fredrik Jensen: “The feeling after a Friday night like this is just fantastic – these are the moments I play football for. I honestly didn’t know whether it was my goal or if Jeff was going to get it, but the most important thing is that the ball ended up in the net. We were the better team today and even though the match was a bit chaotic, we did well. We weren’t strong at home at the start of this season, but we’ve used the winter break superbly to discuss things, and now we’re showing what we’re made of.”
Ermedin Demirović: “We performed well from the very first whistle, and showed that we wanted to win the game. Even despite the disallowed goals we kept believing in ourselves and had the feeling on the pitch that it was a question of when, not if, the goal would come. We’re all delighted that it came just before the final whistle.”
Arne Engels: “We played a very good game; we created some good chances on the ball and didn’t let much through defensively. It was a shame that my goal didn’t count, but I’m happy that we won the game. I’m delighted with how things are going for me here. I want to show what I can do in every training session and I need to keep working hard in the future, so that I carry on learning lots of new things.”
Enrico Maaßen: “I’m very, very happy with my team. It was a tough game, because when you celebrate so often and the goals keep getting disallowed, you have to find a way to stick at it. We did that brilliantly, and the goal at the end was a triumph of mind over matter. It felt like six players wanted to force the ball over the line – that just shows the spirit we have I this team. I’m proud that we found our feet again after the defeat in Mainz and put in as good a performance as we did, to secure our third 1-0 home win in a row and earn the points against one of our closest rivals. Now it’s all about carrying that form to Berlin and the next tough game, but tonight we can be really happy that we won the match!”
TSG Head Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: “Congratulations to Augsburg for the win. We didn’t start the game well, but then found our feet quite quickly and played okay for 20 minutes in the first half. We made life difficult for ourselves though, losing the ball and not looking for the spaces and deep runs. The second half turned into a bit of a hard-fought game, and unfortunately we’ve lost by conceding from a corner. It’s tough to take, but we’ll keep working and we have a long week ahead of us, where we can take a lot of time to make sure we do better against Dortmund.”
