A player with experience at the highest level
Striker Steve Mounié has joined FC Augsburg on a free transfer. The 29-year-old Benin international most recently played for French top-tier side Stade Brestois 29, and has signed a contract with FCA until 30th June 2027.
Mounié joins the Fuggerstädter after scoring 44 goals and providing 11 assists in 162 Ligue 1 games. The physical forward also featured for English side Huddersfield Town from 2017 to 2020, making 59 appearances in the Premier League. Last season, the 29-year-old scored six goals as he helped Brest to qualification for the Champions League. Mounié is also currently captain of the Benin national side, for whom he has scored 17 goals in 53 caps.
Ready to tackle another top European league
“FC Augsburg were really keen to sign me and are the perfect club for me to perform at my best on the pitch. I will give everything for the club from the very first training session onwards and hopefully play my part in a successful season,” said Steve Mounié. “I’m also proud that this move makes me the first Benin international to play in three of the top five European leagues.”
FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic is also pleased that the club were able to get the free transfer done. “Steve Mounié is a physically robust forward who’s good in the air, and is a threat in the opponent’s penalty area. Steve also brings experience at the highest level and will be an important pillar of our team as a personality in the dressing room.”
