FC Augsburg extended their unbeaten run to 10 games following a hard-fought 1-0 win against VfL Wolfsburg on Bundesliga matchday 26. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen kept a clean sheet for the sixth straight match, further extending his own personal record in the division.
Head coach Jess Thorup named an unchanged starting XI following last weekend's win in Dortmund. Mads Pedersen was able to return to the matchday squad for the first time following his ankle injury.
There was plenty of intensity to be seen on the pitch right from the get-go, with both teams focused on remaining solid at the back. The 11th minute saw a slight miscommunication between Chrislain Matsima and Dimitrios Giannoulis, with the latter able to clear the ball just in time. Following this early scare, FCA began to settle into the game and worked their way up the pitch with the help of long balls and plenty of crosses. The best opportunity of the first half fell to Elvis Rexhbecaj, as his cross bounced off Denis Vavro's knee and nearly resulted in an own goal (33'). It was one of just a few chances for either side in the opening half.
Tietz scores the winning goal
FCA came out of the break with plenty of momentum and were soon rewarded for their efforts. Cédric Zesiger delivered a long ball to Phillip Tietz – sporting a new blonde dye job – with the striker able to beat Vavro one-on-one and slot the ball into the back of the net past Kamil Grabara (53'). The Wolves looked to draw level following a free kick from Maximilian Arnold, but he was only able to hit the wall. FCA remained in control as the match progressed and continued to go in search of a second goal to add to their tally. An FCA corner bounced around inside the box, but neither Tietz, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw or Rexhbecaj were able to poke it over the line.
The closing stages of the game saw Wolfsburg up the pressure in an attempt to force an equaliser. Patrick Wimmer headed a corner-kick onto the bar in the 81st minute, before Dahmen was needed to claw a shot out of the top corner. Zesiger then blocked the rebound. This period of the match saw the visitors create several good chances, but the FCA backline – headed up by captain Gouweleeuw, who was making his 250th appearance in the Bundesliga – stood strong. In the end, Dahmen was able to keep his eighth clean sheet of the season and has now not conceded a goal in over 600 minutes.
FCA will head into the international break unbeaten in their last 10 games and sitting in ninth place (38 points). They will be back in action away at TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday, 29th March (15:30 CET).
