Baum: "We fought to take all three points home"
After a defensive battle, especially in the closing minutes, FC Augsburg held on to secure their 2nd away win of the season with a 2-1 win against Hannover 96. “In the closing stages, we got the luck we needed to take all three points home with us,” said FCA coach Manuel Baum, who was pleased to see his side hold on for the win. Here are the post match thoughts from Hannover.
Andreas Luthe: “We are very pleased to have won today’s match, most importantly because we believed it would be a key match before we kicked off. Ultimately, the end scoreline really doesn’t matter because we held on. It was pleasing to secure a good result because we lost our grasp on the match after taking the lead. However, we defended well and the three points are fully deserved.”
Rani Khedira: “Recently, we have been playing really well but haven’t secured the points our performances deserved. Today was different. It certainly wasn’t a classic but we managed to secure all three points. It was really difficult for us in the closing stages to physically defend against Hannover. However, the victory was really important for us.”
Fredrik Jensen, who came off the bench to make his Bundesliga debut for FCA: “We have a busy week ahead of us and we are glad to have started this week with a win. We now want to do the same in the DFB-Pokal.”
FCA coach Manuel Baum: “I think we started the match really well and it was great to secure an early 1-0 lead. Our attack then struggled to put together good moves and it turned into a battle of attrition. Hannover pressed very well against us today but we didn’t allow ourselves to crumble under pressure. After Hannover’s consolation goal, we decided to sit deeper and we got the luck we needed in the final stages to hold on and take all three points home with us. I am satisfied with our performance defensively but we need to more going forwards that we managed to achieve today.”
Hannover 96 head coach André Breitenreiter:“We did not take what we wanted from today’s match. We knew exactly what to expect and were second best for over 65 minutes. We didn’t play well and didn’t create the space on the pitch we wanted to. The Augsburg penalty came from no-where and suddenly we started to show the football we wanted to play. We played courageously and dynamically all of a sudden and we started to create several chances. Unfortunately we couldn’t force the ball home. We probably didn’t deserve to earn a point from this match when you consider our overall performance. FC Augsburg were the better team from the first minute of the match.”
