Special Football Tournament in South Africa

"Green Week 2025"

Social 31.03.2025, 15:00

As part of the "Football4WASH" initiative, a special football tournament was held in Mbombela, South Africa, on March 14, 2025, with over 1,500 children participating. The tournament, within the context of Sports4Development, was organized in collaboration with FC Augsburg, Viva con Agua South Africa, TS Galaxy, and the German Football League (DFL), in connection with World Water Day. As with the regularly held workshops, the aim was to raise awareness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) while harnessing the positive power of sport to drive sustainable change.

The tournament, which took place at John Mdluli Primary School, combined sporting events with interactive workshops on water, sanitation, and hygiene. The accompanying workshops not only raised awareness of WASH issues but also fostered a sense of community among the children, youth, and partners involved.

The tournament was a great success and another milestone for the long-term implementation of "Football4WASH" in the Mpumalanga region. The project will continue moving forward to improve the living conditions of children and young people. The collaboration of the organizations in this educational project aims to have both short-term and long-term positive impacts on the region.

About the "Football4WASH" Project

With a special connection to the UNESCO World Heritage Augsburg Water Management System and the significant importance of water as a resource for the global sustainability goals, FC Augsburg has anchored the focus on water as a central element of its sustainability strategy. Therefore, during their summer training camp in South Africa in 2024, the club, together with Viva con Agua, launched the "Football4WASH" project in the Mpumalanga province and will continue to support it in the long term. The water education project for children and youth connects the topics of water, sanitation, and hygiene with exercises from football training. The German Football League (DFL) and the local club TS Galaxy also support the project. In addition, an evaluation will be conducted to determine the infrastructural needs in order to address corresponding supply gaps.
