Giannoulis: “I can’t really celebrate the goal”
The reaction to the 3-1 loss against FC Bayern
After an unbeaten streak of eleven games, FC Augsburg were defeated 3-1 by FC Bayern on Friday evening. FCA took the lead before being pegged back by the league leaders and then had to play the final half an hour with ten men. Read all the post-match reaction here.
Marius Wolf: “We played well today, but none of the points are staying here. The sending off was obviously a key moment. Personally, I didn’t think it was a foul, since Zesi got the ball first. We set our sights high before the match – we wanted to frustrate Bayern and attack them high up the pitch. But the red card turned the game on its head.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “It was a tough game today. I came on when we were a man and a goal down. We had a couple of chances, but we just couldn’t fight back after that. But that’s just how it is sometimes. We’ll keep looking to the future and tackle next week to the best of our abilities.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Up until the sending off we were really in the game and even took the lead through a really nice goal. We didn’t make life easy for Bayern from the outset and even though we couldn’t take our lead into the break, we started the second half well. Then came the turning point, when Zesi was shown a red card – for me, it wasn’t a foul, but when the referee draws a line, he should at the very least be consistent to both sides. It was then incredibly tough for us when we were down to ten men. All in all, we’re feeling pretty disappointed tonight.”
Dimitris Giannoulis: “It’s obviously frustrating that I scored my first goal for the club, but we lost on the night. I can’t really celebrate it, because the team’s success comes first. We put a lot of effort in today, but the sending off made things unnecessarily hard for us. Still, we’ve got to forget about the game today and look to the future – the game in Bochum next week is important.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “My team tried everything today. We faced off against the best team in Germany – maybe even the best team in Europe. We started the game with the wind in our sails and even took the lead. The key moment was the red card, and then Bayern’s second goal a few seconds later. From that point on we know it was going to be really tricky, but we gave it our all up until the final whistle and even took a few risks along the way. In the end, it just wasn’t enough today.”
Vincent Kompany (FC Bayern head coach): “We were expecting a tough match today. FC Augsburg came into the game on a good run of form and – as a result – a lot of confidence, but the team stayed patient, solid and waited for the right moment. We got our reward and we’re really happy with the result.”
