FC Augsburg have strengthened their squad with the addition of a new central midfielder on the final day of the summer transfer window. Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has joined on a season-long loan from Brentford FC. Both clubs have agreed to keep the details of the loan undisclosed.

Onyeka can look forward to a reunion with FCA head coach Jess Thorup, having played under him at Danish first-division side FC Midtjylland, where he spent 2017 to 2021 (123 games). He then moved to Brentford, featuring in 69 Premier League matches for the club (1 goal, 4 assists). Onyeka has also been capped 25 times for Nigeria, in addition to featuring in six Champions League matches during his time at Midtjylland.

Strong midfielder with international experience

“By joining FC Augsburg on loan, I hope to play often and am looking forward to getting to know the team as soon as possible. I’m hoping to have a successful season and am looking forward to working together with Jess Thorup again,” said Onyeka.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to bring Frank Onyeka to FCA. His experience on the international stage, along with his athleticism and physicality make him a strong presence out on the pitch. We are now optimally set up in midfield for the ongoing season, as we have a variety of different players in our team. We’re delighted that Frank has decided to join us. We wish him a good start and a successful time at FCA,” said sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

Onyeka will be away representing Nigeria during the upcoming international break, as they take part in AFCON qualifiers against Benin (Saturday, 7th September) and Rwanda (Tuesday, 10th September). He will then meet up with his new teammates in Augsburg after the international break.
