DFB Cup: FCA travel to Magdeburg
FC Augsburg will visit third division side 1. FC Magdeburg in the first round of the 2017/18 DFB Pokal. The match will take place between 11th-14th August, one week before the new Bundesliga season gets up and running. The draw was made on Sunday, 11th June 2017.
DFB President Reinhard Grindel oversaw the draw, which was broadcasted live on ARD. Former Borussia Dortmund player Sebastian Kehl was responsible for drawing out the ties.
Although FCA have poor memories of facing Magdeburg in the competition, head coach Manuel Baum is looking forward to what will be the first competitive match of the new season: “Obviously we’ll go into the tie as the favourites and our aim is to justify this status. However, we know that it will not be easy. We have been beaten by them before. We want to make amends this time!”
FC Magdeburg are currently plying their trade in the third division. They ended the 2016/17 campaign in fourth place, meaning they narrowly missed out on a chance to reach the second tier via the play offs. The sides met in the city in the opening round of the 2014/15 edition of the DFB Pokal, with the hosts running out 1-0 winners.
