FC Augsburg have reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal in dramatic fashion. FCA eventually overcame Karlsruher SC in a penalty shoot-out. Here’s all the reaction.

Maximilian Bauer: “It was obviously incredible to equalise in injury time of extra time and then win the game on penalties. Emotions always run high after a match like this, but I’d like to apologise to KSC and their fans for celebrating my winning penalty in front of the KSC supporters – that wasn’t necessary. That aside, we kept believing and are delighted to have got through.”

Phillip Tietz: “It’s just pure joy at this point, straight after the game. I have to say that KSC played really well in what was a proper cup tie. But we competed well and our goalkeeper sent us into the quarter-finals. I have to hand it to Finn, who showed what a great ‘keeper he is.”

Finn Dahmen: “That was a classic cup tie with the perfect ending for us, and we’re delighted to have got through. As a goalkeeper, you can only really win in a penalty shoot-out. I’m really pleased to have saved two penalties in this game, because it helped the team. You do of course need a bit of luck, and we had that today.”

Jess Thorup: “Before I talk about the game, I’d like to apologise to KSC and their fans for celebrating in front of the Karlsruhe supporters after the winning penalty. We simply shouldn’t do that. We had a decent start to the game, took the lead before half time and wanted to get a second in the second period. I have to compliment KSC though. They played really well and put us under the cosh. Suddenly, it was 1-1, and after an error from us in extra time, we even went 2-1 down. We always kept believing however, and we got the equaliser in injury time of extra time thanks to our never-say-die attitude. The lads kept their cool really well in the shoot-out and converted confidently. Overall, it was a typical cup tie and we’re now into the quarter-finals. We can learn a lot from this game as a team.”

Christian Eichner: “Emotions always run high, particularly after a decisive penalty. FCA have apologised for their actions and we’ll draw a line under that. I thought we were the better team in the match, even though FCA had more possession. It was a war of attrition, where we conceded very few chances. In the second half, the game was only heading in one direction. We made it 2-1 after winning the ball back. In the final two minutes though, my team were sadly too naïve and conceded the equaliser. Goals like that probably only happen in the final minute of a cup game. It’s really disappointing to lose on penalties. We now have to switch our focus onto Kaiserslautern.”
