Weinzierl: "We want to build on this momentum against Gladbach"

Maier tests positive for Covid-19 - Gumny out with ligament tear

First Team 10.02.2022, 14:24

After a 2-0 home win against 1. FC Union Berlin last weekend, FC Augsburg will now be looking to build on this result this Saturday (15:30 CET) against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Head coach Markus Weinzierl will need to make at least one change to his squad ahead of the match.

Weinzierl wouldn't have wanted to make any changes to the line-up following their stellar performance against Union last time out, but the head coach will be forced to make at least one ahead of this weekend.

Midfielder Arne Maier has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the match against the Foals. Jan Morávek, Carlos Gruezo or Mads Pedersen could all slot in to replace him. Right-back Robert Gumny will also not be available, after having suffered an ankle ligament tear during training which will sideline him for the foreseeable future.

Weinzierl on Framberger: "He loves this club"

In all likelihood, Raphael Framberger will start at right-back again, just like he did against Union Berlin. "He has worked hard to earn this," Weinzierl said about the FCA academy product who has been at the club since 2004. "He's a real role model and loves this club." Framberger said that he hasn't played as much this season "as I would have hoped. But, I've always tried to give it everything in training." He was "very excited" to hear he would be making his seventh start of the season against Union, adding "It's great fun, especially now that the fans are back."

Framberger and his teammates delivered what was probably their best performance of the season so far against Union. "We used the time afforded by the international break and spoke a lot about what we can improve on," said the 26-year-old. "That worked well against Union, and now we want to build on it in Gladbach."

The head coach is also hoping that his side are able to build on this strong performance against the Foals. "We want to take this confidence and build on it in Gladbach," he said, adding that he is hoping to see a brave performance from his side. "The aim is to always play to our strengths. That's easier for us to do at home. Now, we will need to deliver a similar performance on the road."

Weinzierl: "We know that they are under pressure"

Currently, there is only one point separating FCA (22) and Gladbach (23) in the standings. "It's incredibly tight down there," said Weinzierl, as his side have a chance to leapfrog the Foals with a win. "We know that they are under pressure and really need to win. They have a lot of potential, and had other goals in mind this season, but if you aren't able to deliver as a team, then individual quality doesn't matter."

Despite their current position in the table, Framberger sees Borussia as being a strong side. "They have a lot of individual talent, but haven't been able to find their rhythm yet. We will need to be alert, because they can always pull off a surprise."
