U21 EUROs: Engels and Bauer hoping to reach the next round, Beljo and Čolina eliminated
FCA players still winless
Following the second round of group stage games at the U21 EUROs, just two of the four FCA players taking part in the tournament still have a chance of advancing to the next round: Arne Engels and Maximilian Bauer.
Arne Engels was an unused substitute as the Belgium U21s faced Georgia U21s in their second group stage game. Belgium looked on course for victory, before conceding an 87th minute equaliser to draw 2-2. With the point, they remain in second place, level with the Netherlands U21s (both on two points). Belgium will face Portugal U21s in their final group stage match on Tuesday (18:00 CEST), who have picked up just one point so far.
Maximilian Bauer and Germany U21s suffered an unfortunate 2-1 defeat to Czech Republic U21s, despite having several chances. Hoffenheim’s Angelo Stiller was able to bring Germany level, but it wasn’t enough for the defending champions to take something from the match. FCA defender Bauer was an unused substitute. Their final group stage match will be against England U21s on Wednesday (18:00 CEST), with Germany needing to win while also having to rely on Israel beating Czech Republic in the other fixture at the same time.
Croatia U21s fail to advance
Meanwhile, Dion Beljo and David Čolina have already been eliminated from the competition. After losing 2-0 to Ukraine U21s in the opening match, Croatia U21s suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain U21s. Beljo was taken off at half time, with Čolina being subbed on in the 73rd minute. Croatia will end their campaign on Tuesday evening (20:45 CEST) against Romania U21s, who are also yet to score or pick up a point at the U21 EUROs.
