Tietz: “We lost the game in one 11-minute spell”
Reaction from the 3-1 defeat in Freiburg
FC Augsburg went home empty-handed from their match away at SC Freiburg. After falling 3-0 down before half time, the team only managed to find a consolation goal in the second period. Here’s all the reaction from the match.
Chrislain Matsima: “We started the match well and were in the game from the start. We lost our way after conceding the first goal, and let the game slip away in one 11-minute period. I’m pleased that we put in a better performance in the second half, even though it wasn’t enough for a point. We have to work on not letting setbacks completely knock the wind out of our sails.”
Alexis Claude-Maurice: “Our aim was to stay compact as a team. We managed that at the start but not in that spell just before half time. It then wasn’t easy to go into the second half three goals down. We threw everything at it, but couldn’t score more than just the one goal. Now, we want to perform better against Dortmund.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We were in control to start with, but after conceding the first goal we suddenly became sloppy and made too many simple mistakes. That allowed the opponents onto us and we just can’t let that happen. We have to do better overall as a team and stay focused over the full 90 minutes. We had our chances in the second half, but we should have finished them better.”
Phillip Tietz: “I think we did well in the first 30 minutes and had chances to score. Then, we lost our concentration in one 11-minute spell and weren’t able to put Freiburg under any more pressure. That all happened far too easily. In the second half, we couldn’t make it 3-2 and properly get back in the game. We now need to work on the things we have to do better and improve for the home game against Dortmund.”
Jess Thorup: “We spoke before the game about how the last two away matches weren’t good. It was pretty even for the first 30 minutes, but we suddenly conceded almost out of nothing and then let in three in 11 minutes. We lost the game because of those 11 minutes. We did manage to make it 3-1, but we couldn’t get it back to 3-2. I felt like we were missing that last bit of composure needed to get back in the game. In the end, we deserved to lose.”
Julian Schuster: “It was tough to find any space from the start, because Augsburg were very compact. We remained patient though, and those three quickfire goals before the break set us on the path to victory. FCA then switched it up and caused us problems, but we were able to hold on. I’m very pleased to get another win.”
