Lukas Petkov joins SV Elversberg
Midfielder returns to Bundesliga 2

Midfielder Lukas Petkov has completed a permanent move to Bundesliga 2 side SV Elversberg, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract. The FCA academy product joined the club in 2008 from SV Mering and made his way through the ranks of the academy, before spending last season on loan at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Both clubs have agreed to keep the details of the contract undisclosed.
Petkov made his Bundesliga debut on the final matchday of the 2020/21 season, signing his first professional contract shortly after. The midfielder went on to feature eight times in the Bundesliga for FCA. He then joined third-division side SC Verl in search of more playing time (37 games, 11 goals). The following season, Petkov moved to second-division side Greuther Fürth on loan, going on to feature in 44 competitive matches for the club. Petkov has also been able to make his senior debut for Bulgaria, earning five caps so far.
Taking the next step
"Following my positive experience at Fürth, I'm excited to get to continue playing in Bundesliga 2. My time at FCA has given me the opportunity to continue my development at a club with ambitious targets. Having been offered a long-term opportunity at a new club, I wanted to take this chance and take the next step in my career," Petkov said about his move.
"Despite our primary goal being to integrate our academy players into our own first team, we did not see many opportunities materialising in the near future for Lukas to feature as regularly as he would need to in order to continue his own development. Lukas sees the potential for further growth and more playing time at Elversberg, which is why we agreed to the move," said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic. "Although Lukas' journey with FCA has now come to an end, we are pleased to see another of our academy players secure a long-term contract as a professional footballer. We wish Lukas all the best for the future."
