Herrlich: “It’s in our own hands”
FC Augsburg have another chance to secure their Bundesliga survival against Fortuna Düsseldorf at the weekend. The Fuggerstädter need just one point against an inform Fortuna side to secure another season in Germany’s top flight. Head coach Heiko Herrlich is hoping for a strong performance from his side and wants to go into the game in Düsseldorf on Saturday 20th June (15:30 CEST) full of confidence.
FCA will be looking to put things right after the 3-1 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the week (3-1). Despite the result, Heiko Herrlich saw a good first half performance from his team, “against Hoffenheim we put them under a lot of pressure and had the lion’s share of possession.” However, it turned out to be a game of two halves for FCA as they struggled to keep up with the pace after the break. “We gave the ball away too easily, which lost us a lot of momentum. In the end that contributed to our downfall. However, in other games we’ve been able to withstand the pressure. We want to achieve that again against Düsseldorf.”
Herrlich: “We have to put in our best possible performance”
The team is aware of the current situation they’re in and it’s in their own hands to secure their safety, according to Herrlich. “We have to put in our best possible performance and really want to take away the three points. We have never given up. We have to concentrate on our own performance and go into the game against Düsseldorf with confidence and positivity.”
The 48-year-old isn’t paying attention to the teams around them. All focus is going into their own performance, not on that of their rivals. In order to ensure fresh legs are out on the pitch against Düsseldorf, the head coach is likely to rotate in one or two positions. “We now have our third game in just seven days. After the changes we’ve made in the last few games, we have a full squad to choose from against Düsseldorf and we will rotate in a few positions.” FCA will have to do without Tin Jedvaj against Fortuna, with the Croatian serving a one-game suspension.
We have to rely on our own abilities.
However, at the same time, Herrlich warns his side about the upcoming opponent. “Düsseldorf have already had some impressive results and performances so far this season. They play high quality football and will give it their all. We want to hold firm and try to stop them from playing their game, as well as creating good opportunities of our own.”
The most important thing is that the team rely on their own abilities and put in their best possible performance. If they give it 100%, they will be able to secure their survival, says the coach.
