Gruezo and Ecuador knocked out of World Cup
Vargas and Switzerland also suffer defeat
While Carlos Gruezo and Ecuador’s World Cup campaign is over, Ruben Vargas and Switzerland are in control of their own destiny despite a defeat against Brazil.
Carlos Gruezo made his first start at the World Cup in Ecuador’s final group-stage game against Senegal. A draw would have been enough for the South American side to reach the last 16, but Gruezo and his teammates were made to deal with a 2-1 defeat. The midfielder was brought off at half time.
Gruezo’s FCA teammate Ruben Vargas was in action a day earlier as Switzerland took on Brazil. The forward started and played 58 minutes of his side’s second group-stage game, which ended in a victory for the five-time World Champions. Manchester United’s Casemiro scored the only goal of the game seven minutes from full time. Despite the 1-0 defeat, Switzerland can reach the knockout rounds with a victory over Serbia on Friday (2nd December, 20:00 CET).
The third FCA player at the World Cup, Robert Gumny, will be in action on Wednesday (30th November, 20:00 CET) when Poland take on Argentina. A draw would see Poland advance and, depending on the outcome of the Saudi Arabia vs. Mexico game taking place at the same time, even a narrow defeat could be enough for Gumny and his teammates to reach the last 16
