Former FC Augsburg player Imre Szabics joins the coaching team
Begins his work on Tuesday
After Jonas Scheuermann’s departure to join Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, FC Augsburg were left with a slot to fill on the coaching team. 43-year-old, former FCA player Imre Szabics has taken on the job of assisting head coach Jess Thorup, signing a two-year contract until 30th June 2026. His work on the training pitch begins today.
The Hungarian international wore FCA colours for three years
Between 2007 and 2010, Imre Szabics played 58 competitive times for FCA, notching nine goals and nine assists during that time. After leaving Augsburg, the Hungarian, who played 36 international matches (13 goals) for his home country, moved to Sturm Graz in Austria, where he retired in 2013. He went on to work as head scout for Graz, before later becoming an assistant coach. Furthermore, he gained lots of experience as assistant coach for both the Hungarian and Austrian national sides.
“I have always closely followed FCA and admire what has been created here, so it is really special to be part of the club again. My talk with the guys in charge, Michael Ströll, Marinko Jurendic and Jess Thorup, was very positive, and I am looking forward to working with the rest of the coaching team,” said Imre Szabics after his return to Augsburg.

Alongside his experience as a player, Imre Szabics offers many years of coaching expertise, both in club and international football. On top of that, his work with youth set-ups and as a head scout provides a good view to the development of young first-team players and academy talents. With the signing of Imre Szabics, we hope to continue promoting young talent in a targeted manner,” said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
