FCA suffer home defeat to Mainz

First Team 18.09.2016, 14:17
Two home games into the season and FC Augsburg are still without a point at home. On Bundesliga matchday 3 FCA suffered a 3-1 home defeat to FSV Mainz 05 in the WWK ARENA. Jhon Cordoba had given the visitors the lead in the first half, before Konstantinos Stafylidis levelled the score midway through the second. But a quick response from Mainz through Yunus Malli and Yoshinori Muto saw Augsburg fall to their second home loss of the campaign. FCA manager Dirk Schuster made just one change to the side that won in Bremen, with Dong-Won Ji replacing the injured Cajuby. Mainz enjoyed the better start with Daniel Brosinski firing off a warning shot five minutes into the game, which FCA keeper Marwin Hitz was able to parry. Two minutes later though a Malli corner reached Cordoba, whose header from the penalty spot settled in the back of the net. Augsburg attempted to turn the tide, but apart from several long range attempts they were unable to create any real danger. Mainz were content to focus on their compact shape in defence and rarely looked to enter the final third after their opener. Just shy of the break, Alfred Finnbogason received a long ball forward but Mainz keeper Jonas Lössl managed to clear the ball, as Augsburg entered the break with a one goal deficit. There was more purpose in Augsburg's game after the break. Ji's cross into the box found former Mainz player Ja-Cheol Koo, but his volleyed effort proved a comfortable save for Lössl. Midway through the second half Stafylidis tried his luck and struck the ball from a good 25 yards out to give Augsburg the equaliser. But Mainz were able to respond immediately and regained their lead through Malli's header just two minutes later. With nine minutes left to play the visitors killed off the game, as Muto added to the Zerofivers' lead. The defeat was further overshadowed by Dominik Kohr's severe injury, which he sustained in added time of the second half following a nasty tackle by José Rodriguez.
