FCA lose to record champions

FC Augsburg lost the Bavarian derby against FC Bayern Munich 6-0 on matchday 26 at the Allianz Arena. A Robert Lewandowski hat-trick, Thomas Müller's brace and a goal from Thiago set Bayern on their way to an emphatic victory. FCA head coach Manuel Baum made six changes to the starting XI ahead of the match. Christoph Janker, Philipp Max, Paul Verhaegh, Tim Rieder and Raul Bobadilla came in for Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Martin Hinteregger, Georg Teigl, Konstantinos Stafylidis, Moritz Leitner and Ja-Cheol Koo, who was suspended for this clash. Bayern took control right from the outset. Thomas Müller tried his luck after just two minutes but his effort went over the bar. FCA spent most of the opening few minutes defending as they sought to keep out Lewandowski and co. Augsburg had their first decent opportunity at the other end in the eleventh minute. Raul Bobadilla used sheer strength to mount a counterattack, beating two Bayern players on his way before playing it to Dominik Kohr. However the young midfielder was unable to test Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich with his effort. However it only took until the 17th minute before Robert Lewandowski netted his and the home side's first of the afternoon, turning nicely before finishing into the top corner from Thiago's pass through. FCA were lucky not to concede a second in the 28th minute. Thomas Müller let fly from outside the box and his powerful, low effort looked like it was on its way in but clattered off the post. The Germany international saw another effort hit the woodwork just minutes later but it was still to be his day, tapping in after 36 minutes to double the hosts' lead. There were still some positives to see from Augsburg's point of view and Christoph Janker's superb last-ditch slide tackle on Lewandowski just before the break exemplified that. Augsburg headed into the dressing room at half-time two goals down and up against it. Augsburg tried to open out a little more in the second half but were punished in the 55th minute, when Lewandowski doubled his tally for the afternoon as he hit past Hitz with a clinical finish. From that point on, the hosts dominated completely and Thiago made it four following some neat build-up play just after the hour mark. Augsburg struggled to create much going forward against a stubborn Bayern defence. Kevin Danso rose up after a free-kick into the box from the left-hand side but saw his header go marginally wide of the Bayern goal. Bayern put their foot on the accelerator as the match began to draw to a close and Lewandowski secured yet another Bundesliga hat-trick in the 79th minute. Just over 60 seconds later, Müller made sure that he also left the field with more than one goal, finishing at the near post to make it six. Georg Teigl did manage to have a final effort for FCA with five minutes remaining but Baum's side could not find a consolation goal and it ended 6-0 to the reigning champions.
