FCA win convincingly against Werder Bremen

First Team 29.10.2017, 18:57
After four games without a win, FCA managed to change their fortunes after earning all three points in a dominant away victory over Werder Bremen. FCA’s standout player was Michael Gregoritsch, who scored a brace, while Alfred Finnbogason bagged the other goal from the penalty spot. Manuel Baum made one change to the side that lost 2-1 to Hannover 96 at home: Marcel Heller replaced Jonathan Schmid on the right wing. The opening stages at the Weserstadion were evenly balanced, as both sides took their time to settle down into the game. Alfred Finnboagson had the game’s first chance, as he beat a couple of Werder defenders to wiggle his way into the penalty area, but his shot from a tight angle was pushed aside by Pavlenka in the Werder net. Werder took control from that point on, although FCA remained a danger on the counter attack. Caiuby had the next shot in the eleventh minute after some nice build-up play from Daniel Baier, but it was easy to deal with for Pavlenka. Werder had their first chance down the other end shortly after, but Ishak Belfodil’s shot flew wildly over. The minutes passed by without much action after that, although that would change just before the break. Firstly, Daniel Baier clattered a shot off the woodwork after the ball fell to him after a corner. FCA would make no mistake with their next chance though. Daniel Baier was again involved, although this time he crossed the ball in to the Werder penalty area, where a waiting Michael Gregoritsch headed home powerfully to make it 1-0 to the visitors (40’). It was the Austrian’s fifth goal on the season. The first half wasn’t done there though. Goalscorer Michael Gregoritsch passed the ball to Finnbogason in the penalty area, who was brought down clumsily by Niklas Moisander. Penalty to Augsburg. The Icelander would step up to take the resulting spot kick, and made no mistake (45+2’). 2-0 at the break to FCA. Werder came out of the break with intent, but ultimately the first chance of the second half would fall to Augsburg. Philipp Max whipped in a free-kick into the area and picked out Gregoritsch, who’s header narrowly missed and went into the side netting (49’). The visitors kept on piling the pressure, and ultimately would put things beyond all doubt. The always dangerous Caiuby made use of a great tackle by Rani Khedira to push up the field and into the acres of space he had in front of him, before playing in Gregoritsch. The Austrian made no mistake, and after slotting the ball home past Pavlenka, it was 3-0 to Augsburg. Game over - a fantastic away victory for FCA!
