Finnbogason, Caligiuri, Framberger and Gregoritsch on the scoresheet
FCA won their fifth friendly on Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten in pre-season. Heiko Herrlich’s side defeated SCR Altach 5-2. FCA went ahead from the spot in the first half, although Altach equalised before half time. Goals from Caligiuri, Framberger, Gregoritsch and Finnbogason sealed the win in the second half.
Rafał Gikiewicz continued in goal, while Alfred Finnbogason was picked to play up front. Felix Götze was back in the squad for the first time after his Covid-19 infection, although he didn’t come off the bench.
The first chance of the game fell to FCA in the second minute. Ruben Vargas couldn’t get on the end of a Raphael Framberger cross. Alfred Finnbogason was then fouled in the box a minute later. The striker took it himself and converted to put Augsburg ahead after three minutes. Gikiewicz then saved a header moments after, before FC Augsburg looked for a second. Framberger headed a Gikiewicz clearance on to Vargas, who burst through down the right and crossed for Rani Khedira. He was denied well though by Altach goalkeeper Casali (9’).
The Austrians often tried their luck from distance, but Gikiewicz easily saved the efforts. FCA continued to pressure their opponents, however Finnbogason and Gregoritsch couldn’t add to the early lead.
The Austrians came into the game more before the break. Meilinger’s shot from 20 yards narrowly went over the bar. After a foul from Rani Khedira, Thurnwalder scored a free-kick to level things.
Augsburg changed the keeper for the second half, with Benjamin Leneis replacing Gikiewicz. Herrlich’s side played attacking football and the first missed chance came when Khedira narrowly missed the target with an acrobatic effort (51’). Three minutes later, Framberger played a pass through to Finnbogason. The Icelandic striker squared it for Daniel Caligiuri and the new signing slotted home to make it 2-1 (54’). Framberger then added a third shortly after. After some good work with Finnbogason, the defender scored from a tight angle.
Altach pulled one back from a corner in the 71st minute, but FCA quickly restored their two-goal lead. Finnbogason, Vargas and Gregoritsch combined with the latter making it 4-1 (81’). The same trio were involved in the fifth goal, albeit ‘Finnbo’ was the man who got the goal (84’).
