Baier: "We cannot let up"

The captain is back onboard. After several weeks injured on the sidelines, Daniel Baier made his comeback in FCA’s 0-0 draw with VfL Wolfsburg. In an interview with FCA Fan-TV, the veteran spoke about his return, his goal-scoring record and the imminent clash with FC Schalke 04.

Daniel Baier’s last appearance was in September, during the 3-2 defeat in Bremen. On Sunday in Wolfsburg, he had enough energy to play 82 minutes on his return from injury. "I am happy to be back on the pitch," said the captain: "It’s always a difficult time when you’re injured, and when the team’s not doing so well either, it hurts twice as much."

His experience gave the team more stability straight away and FCA went on to keep their first clean sheet of the season. "It was a good performance away from home," said the midfielder, praising his teammates. Having drawn 2-2 with Bayern the week before, the Fuggerstädters have taken a point from two of the league’s top sides on consecutive weekends. "We cannot let up," demands Baier, "we need to show the same commitment on the pitch against Schalke."

Baier on Schalke: "They’re playing impressive football"

After a disappointing 2018/19 season, the Royal Blues have started their new campaign well under David Wagner. "They are playing impressive football, they all fight for one another," said Baier. "They are a tough team that don’t shy away from any challenges, but they are also technically good when it comes to playing football – it will be a really hard task for us. We need to be strong from the first minute until the last."

Baier himself has fond memories of facing Schalke: Two of his five Bundesliga goals to date were scored in Gelsenkirchen. His Last goal, however, was a good three years ago. "It’s about time," he admitted with a smile, while also emphasising that he is not worried about his goal tally. "When the time comes, I’ll be happy to help the team out. There are other lads here who are better at scoring goals than I am."
