A late goal condemned FCA to a disappointing defeat in their opening game after the restart of the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg. “The goal that we had ruled out knocked us back a bit,” summed up assistant coach Tobias Zellner in the post-match press conference.
Andreas Luthe: “It was a good home performance. It’s a real shame that our goal to make it 2-1 was chalked off, because that would have left us in a good position to take something from the game. We didn’t start particularly well, but that’s understandable after training in the conditions we have for the past weeks. I think both teams did well considering it was the first game back and nobody got injured, which is the most important thing. We want to try and take as many points as possible from the final eight games. We played as a team today and the second-half performance was good. That will give us confidence.”
Eduard Löwen: “It was an even game, so to lose it so late on really hurts. It’s our fault that we didn’t win today. We played well in the second half on the ball, but we need to avoid making easy mistakes and get stuck in more.”
Philipp Max: “None of us had ever played in that kind of atmosphere before. We wanted to put a good shift in today. We weren’t at our best in the first half, but improved after the break and almost took the lead. Losing it in added time is obviously really disappointing. In home games like this, you look forward to the fans, which isn’t possible at the moment, so it’s a bit unusual.”
Tin Jedvaj: “Their late winner will definitely spur us on in the future; we won’t allow it to get us down. We need to carry on working hard and keep our heads up. We need to make more chances in the next few games so that we can start taking the points we desperately need.”
Tobias Zellner: “We took a while to get going in the first half – Wolfsburg were on top. We were the better side after the break, and enjoyed a good period in which we equalised. Our goal to go ahead was unfortunately disallowed. It seemed to wake Wolfsburg up a bit, and knocked us back. Wolfsburg then had two good chances, but I thought it was going to peter out into a draw. Unfortunately, we didn’t defend well in added time and subsequently conceded.”
Oliver Glasner: “We’re really pleased that we won after the a long break. Winning it so late on is always slightly fortuitous, but we were the more dangerous side over the 90 minutes. We were lucky that Udokhai’s goal was ruled out, but I think we were the better team overall. My team’s reaction after they scored pleased me, we put more pressure on them. I think we deserved to win.”
