In what was an entertaining Sunday evening game, FC Augsburg took a deserved point at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. The results means that FCA extend their unbeaten run to four games. Branimir Hrgota put the visitors ahead in front of 26,549 spectators in the WWK-Arena, before Dong-Won Ji equalised before half-time.
Head coach Dirk Schuster selected the same side for the third game in a row. Even Kevin Danso and Julian Günther-Schmidt, both FCA youth players, kept their places in the matchday squad.
Playing in yellow, the away side had the first clear chance of the game after Christoph Janker gave away free-kick early on. Timothy Chandler swung the ball in, but no Eintracht player could get on the end of it. Shortly afterwards, the visitors then took the lead. After a neat bit of play in midfield, Branimir Hrgota picked up the ball at the edge of the box and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner (11’).
However, the early goal didn’t demoralise FCA, who reacted well to going behind. Schuster’s side pushed on into the visitors half, but lacked that bit of precision in the final third. The first clear chance for FCA came in the 28th minute after Eintracht striker Alex Meier nearly turned the ball into his net, from Konstantinos Stafylidis’ cross.
Not long afterwards, FCA then got the equaliser. After Daniel Baier’s corner was initially cleared, it fell to Dong-Won Ji at the edge of the box. The South Korean composed himself with a touch before hammering the ball past Hradecky in the Eintracht goal (34’). Referee Sascha Stegemann then whistled for the interval, with both teams picking up two yellow cards each.
The home side came out of the dressing room with a lot of positive intent and increased the pressure going forward in the second-half. After several good opportunities, Daniel Baier had the best chance to put FCA in front, but his shot was well saved by Lukas Hradecky (57’). Dirk Schuster’s side were controlling the contest with a second goal looking imminent.
However, Eintracht held on well and also had chances of their own going forward. Stafylidis was called into action when he brilliantly cleared the ball off the line in the 66th minute, after Alex Meier chipped Marwin Hitz in the FCA goal.
The game then became a lot more open with chances at both ends. Augsburg will feel that they had good chances to take all three points, but neither team did could find a winner in the end.
