As 2018 draws to a close, we look back on some memorable FC Augsburg moments throughout the year. Today in our end of year review: September.
FC Augsburg welcomed Borussia Mönchengladbach to the WWK ARENA for their first home match of the season. Michael Gregoritsch gave the hosts the lead but FCA had to settle for a 1-1 draw. FCA made a strong start to the season, securing four points from their opening two matches of the season.
However, Augsburg fell to two consecutive defeats after this promising start. FCA took the lead with just eight minutes to go in Mainz but conceded twice in the final seconds to fall to a 2-1 defeat. In Augsburg’s next home match against Werder Bremen, Philipp Max and Ja-Cheol Koo were both on the scoresheet as FCA came from 2-0 down to draw level shortly after half-time. However, FCA conceded an unfortunate third goal and fell to a 3-2 defeat.
Substitute Götze secures point against former club FC Bayern
FCA made the short journey to Munich to face FC Bayern in their next match. The record German champions are not usually a side that you would face to start a run of good form. However, FCA played courageous and secured a valuable 1-1 draw in the Bavarian derby. Substitute Felix Götze came off the bench to score his first ever Bundesliga against his former club.
Following this impressive point in the Allianz Arena, FCA secured their first home victory of the season just a week later. FCA defeated SC Freiburg 4-1 in the WWK ARENA with Alfred Finnbogason in the thick of the action. The Icelandic striker made his first appearance of the season since returning from injury and scored a hat-trick. Finnbogason also overtook Tobias Werner (23) as FC Augsburg’s record Bundesliga goal scorer with 25 goals.
